The Hambantota Piyawara Pre-School has a special section for differently-abled children and is managed by the Southern Youth Development Foundation, a well-established NGO in the area. Named ‘Apey Petaw’ (Our Little Children), this school caters to 46 children most of whom are afflicted with the Down’s Syndrome.

Teachers take great care to develop the individual talents of these children. The talents thus discovered are wide and varied. They range from singing and dancing to sports, handicraft and more. Supporting these children, Club Hotel Dolphin Waikkal, a Hemas hotel, has a permanent exhibition of their paintings which are much appreciated and well Patronised by the large numbers of tourists who check in to the hotel. These little children also perform well in dancing.

Some them were chosen to perform at the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting – Youth Forum held in the southern port city of Hambantota. In an ongoing effort to recognise them and include them in mainstream society, Hemas hires their acts for its various corporate events.
