Mission: To nurture young children with good care in order to provide a solid foundation for a life long journey.

The Piyawara story began in 2002 when the Hemas Group launched its CSR Initiative in partnership with the Children’s Secretariat of the Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs.

The project was named ‘Piyawara’, signifying the initial steps taken by a child at the beginning of the journey through life. Its vision was to nurture children with good care and provide a solid foundation for life.

There was great enthusiasm. The project took shape and began touching the lives of an increasing number of children across the country. Extending our reach, we also embraced marginalised rural communities in Sri Lanka.

This is also a very sustainable project. Once built, the pre-schools are handed over to the local government authorities which appoint qualified teachers and pay their salaries. We set up Parent Teachers’ Associations at all schools to create a sense of belonging and continue to monitor them. The general maintenance of the schools is handled by the Local Government authorities while we conduct regular teacher training programmes.

Today, a decade later in 2012, Piyawara spans the length and breadth of Sri Lanka with 39 pre-schools, over 100 teachers and enriches the lives of well over 3000 children daily.

It has touched the lives of thousands of children from all parts of Sri Lanka, from North to South and East to West, thereby resulting in a better quality of education.

Piyawara stands today as a successful initiative, a sustainable and ongoing project by Hemas and the Children’s Secretariat, demonstrating the success of government – private sector partnerships in addressing national issues and going beyond the geographical divide.
