Piyawara touches the lives of the children in Bandarawela, with the construction of its 53rd pre-school and adds another Piyawara pre-school to the national network. Built on the request made by the Bandarawela Municipal Council, the Sri Lanka Army extended their support to the project by undertaking the construction of the school.
Initiated in 2002, the Piyawara programme was launched in partnership with the Children’s Secretariat of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and Divisional Secretaries. The programme aims to enrich the lives of underprivileged children of Sri Lanka focusing on key aspects within the framework of ECCD providing a holistic approach to pre-school education.
“As a company, Hemas Holdings strives to address the needs of the country and believes that early childhood education is the best investment a country can make to its human capital. Recognizing the importance of ECCD, the Group launched ‘Piyawara’ and over the years built pre-schools across the country identifying the most rural underserved communities, ” says Ms. Shiromi Masakorala, Executive Director of Hemas Outreach Foundation and General Manager – Corporate Communications and Sustainability of Hemas Holdings.
At present the 53 pre-schools across the country has over 115 teachers and over 3500 children attending them daily. In addition, three more pre-schools are under construction in Ampara and Kandy districts.
