A temporary play area in a camp. Children prepare to place the foundation stone for a model preschool in the south.
For each preschool, lists of building materials were drawn up by Haroon, to which
Shiromi would give the green light for payment after detailed checking and Nilantha
would do the needful.
As the funds flowed in from abroad, Nilantha stepped in once again to make meticulous
lists of who was sending money, from where and also how much and converting it to
local currency.
He distinctly remembers AUD 5 sent by an Australian child who had taken the trouble
to write a small note that the money was for the children of Sri Lanka, about whom he
was “thinking”. He wanted the money used for the construction of preschools.
The projection was to allocate Rs. 6 million for each preschool with undertakings from:
• Germany’s DER Touristik to build 8 preschools in Kalutara, Balapitiya, Hikkaduwa,
Galle 1, Habaraduwa, Hungama, Tissamaharama & Samanthurai
• The Hemas Group to build 5 preschools in Wadduwa, Ambalangoda, Matara,
Tangalle & Kalmunai
The Wadduwa Model Preschool.
